Head of Firmware

Job Summary

We are looking for a Head of Firmware to lead our talented embedded software team to help deliver the next generation of intelligence in battery management systems. The successful candidate will be in charge of the firmware team, reporting directly to our CTO, working to deliver products and innovation alongside our Electronics Engineering, Data Science and Manufacturing teams.

Our Head of Firmware will join Brill Power at an exciting time, having recently closed our Series A fundraising round, and moving towards further product innovations and releases. To support this work, we are searching for a Head of Firmware to help manage the Firmware Team’s growth and success. This will consist of managing the firmware evolution, across a range of product families, supporting the existing maintenance contracts as well as delivering on the next generation of Brill Power’s product line.

Job Overview

This is an opportunity to work within a highly skilled environment within the battery industry. Our Tech Team is built around three core pillars: battery modelling, firmware, and hardware.

As the Head of Firmware, you will not only be responsible for and working with a small and dedicated firmware team (currently 5 members), but also be working closely with the other departments within the Tech Team.

You will be taking responsibility for our products embedded firmware development and maintenance. As well as ensuring our product can meet ISO26262 / Functional Safety requirements as it is poised to disrupt the Stationary Storage market and others. We have an ambitious product roadmap, and you will be working with the Project Manager and CTO to define, prioritize and plan our product features.

You should have strong analytical skills and be a critical thinker who is not afraid to keep questioning the status quo. Providing expert knowledge for embedded software systems to meet budget and customer delivery times

The role is based at our head office in Oxford, but a degree of flexible working for you and your team is welcomed. Brill Power offers a hybrid in office and working from home environment. Responsibilities Include

  • Manage Firmware Team’s day to day activities and overall plan.
  • Undertake code reviews, team mentoring and coaching with the objective of establishing core team values, competencies, and best practice.
  • Define and own the firmware architecture, keeping it in line with wider product plan and quality of the team.
  • Understand the overall system architecture of a Brill Power system.
  • Reporting progress to Data Science Team, Hardware Team, and the CTO.
  • Maintain development processes, tools, documentation, and ways of working and improve on them when necessary.
  • Liaise with customers and users of our systems.
  • Help grow and develop the Firmware team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Computer science, science, or engineering degree with programming courses and experience.
  • Previous experience as a firmware team lead.
  • Have demonstrable lead experience in full life cycle embedded software development.
  • Strong skills in Systems / Software engineering and the delivery of products.
  • Awareness of design for test methods and techniques to improve yield and automatic calibration of PCBs at manufacturing bring up. 
  • Previous experience with protecting Company IP in a ‘Release to Manufacture’ environment.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic development environment with rapidly changing priorities.
  • Great communication skill and able to discuss complex technical issues to other members of the team.
  • Experience of full product lifecycle and delivering firmware updates to customers.
  • Experience with continuous integration tools (such as Jenkins or Gitlab), build tools and version control (such as Subversion, Github, Gitlab)
  • Experience and understanding of electronics hardware.
  • Firmware architecting experience.
  • C / C++ / Python (Ideally proficient in at least two out of three)
  • Have experience in developing application software, drivers, and GUI for STM32 or similar microcontrollers
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with the Zephyr RTOS.
  • Experience with Gitlab.
  • Functional safety experience (ISO26262).
  • Experience in MISRA, AUTOSAR.
  • Strong testing background (TDD, unit testing, LINT, etc.)
  • Experience with Manufacturing Self Test, and Factory Calibration of Products.
  • Familiarity in bug tracking
  • Experience with electrical circuit design.
  • Ability to read and understand circuit schematics.
  • Interest in power electronics and motor drives.
