11 June 2025, SNEC Shanghai, China

On the opening day of SNEC, China’s largest international exhibition for battery and energy storage systems in Shanghai, Brill Power, in partnership with Lithium Valley, unveiled a new battery module, the HELIOS, designed to enable developers of industrial and utility-scale battery systems to extract maximum potential from batteries and deliver a range of commercial and performance improvements, including increasing battery utilisation by up to 61%*.

Founded in 2016, Brill Power is an Oxford University spin-out and a market-leader in novel hardware, software and analytics technologies that optimise the performance of battery systems. Backed by global investors including Legal & General Capital, Barclays Climate Ventures, Oxford Science Enterprises and Oxford University, Brill Power’s patented approach to battery management provides a compelling commercial and technical advantage to BESS OEM’s, developers and owners.

With partners already in the UK, USA, Europe and Australasia, Brill Power are bringing their technology to China with their strategic technical and manufacturing partner, Lithium Valley. Brill Power technology is also embedded within all the BESS products of Palmer Energy Technology Ltd.

At the heart of the HELIOS module is BrillCore, Brill Power’s patented battery management technology that provides intelligent ‘active loading’ of battery modules to overcome the inherent limitation of the weakest cell in systems limiting performance. Active loading allows all of the potential from battery packs to be utilised, whilst also enabling packs within a string to be continuously balanced during charge and discharge, increasing usable energy and reducing long balancing steps.

With system uptime becoming increasingly important, the HELIOS improves availability by adding module-level redundancy and reducing both unplanned and planned downtime. Modules that fail are isolated, enabling the BESS rack and system to continue to function whilst rack DC voltage can also be retained thanks to integrated power conversion at rack level. Modules are also able to have SoC calibrated through independent charge/discharge cycles, removing the need for full system charge/discharge cycles every 4-6 weeks.

Brill Power’s BrillOS firmware platform has been further refined for the HELIOS, enabling full OTA update capability. Crucially, this enables embedded State of Charge and State of Health algorithms to be continuously optimised through a system’s life, reducing the divergence between actual SoC and reported SoC. Asset optimisers and owners will be able to make more informed trading decisions and BESS OEMs will gain greater confidence in SoX reporting.

The HELIOS module will combine Brill Power’s technology with the highest grade 314Ah LFP cells, delivering exceptional performance and energy density. Combined, the HELIOS module will reduce the Levelised Cost of Storage for BESS by up to 26%. The HELIOS module will be manufactured by Lithium Valley, Brill Power’s strategic partner and one of China’s most advanced BESS module and system OEM’s.

Co-founder and CEO, Christoph Birkl commented: “We’re excited to launch our new HELIOS battery module in partnership with Lithium Valley, expanding our offering to BESS OEMs and integrating our world leading battery management technology into a full module solution.”

“With our existing products already managing multi-MWh systems for some of our key partners, we are looking forward to working closely with existing and new partners to integrate the HELIOS module into utility scale BESS systems and improve the return on investment for BESS owners.”

The HELIOS battery module is available for orders immediately from Brill Power, with global deliveries commencing Q1 2026. Within China, the HELIOS module will be sold under licence by Lithium Valley.
